Random Thought for Friday, May 20, 2016: *** Head desk ***

IMG_20140505_085058Welcome to Friday’s Random Thought.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, “head desk” refers to one expressing their frustration by repeatedly banging their head against the top surface of a desk.

Normally one engages in this self inflicting painful activity when encountering something insanely stupid. For people who work in IT this is usually something that has happened when working with an end-user.

Please understand that I am not referring to that sort of end-user who needs more involved help or hand holding in physically setting up a new computer or using Microsoft Word. No, being able to help someone in that sort of situation is one of the reasons I started down this path decades ago.

I love helping people to”become comfortable with their discomfort”. If you happen to call on me and I take the necessary time to help you along, to become comfortable and less frustrated with technology, then you have done something wonderful for me. You allowed me the honor of helping you, of doing something useful with my day and in turn make a difference in yours. For that opportunity I give you my most humble thanks.

I am talking about people who appear to have lost all sense of reason and common sense and technology is somehow involved. I could relay the story of how I had an end-user screaming at us on the phone because we were attempting to poison her. You would not believe me on this one and to be fair, if it had not actually happened to me, I would not believe it either

Okay, I’ll tell you. This one user, she was allergic to mono sodium glutamate; a common item found in most ‘Chinese’ food here in the USA. She called into our help desk very upset. She insisted that someone was trying to poison her as the warning light on her phone was lit red. I had to explain to her that the MSG light on her phone actually meant that there was a new voice mail message and that it was not a special chemical detection device for her personal safety.

To be fair, this was at a time when corporate enterprise desk phones were just starting to become more sophisticated and message waiting lights on these phones was a very new feature. This was not the first sort of thing that made me ***head desk *** but it one of the more memorable in my career.

So what is that one moment that made me *** head desk *** to the point of passing out?

No it was not someone using a cd-rom tray as a cup holder nor that time someone took an old 5 1/4 inch floppy disk and folded it up to fit in a 3 1/2 inch floppy drive. It wasn’t that time someone thought they could pay their internet services bill by putting quarters in the ‘slots’ on the front of the computer. Just a note, those slots were the cooling vents.

It wasn’t that time with the person putting white out on the computer screen to edit a document nor that day when someone was upset that they could not right-click on an old Mac Classic computer (the mouse only had one button).

I have to say it was that one time when I found a user trying to make a copy of their document at a photocopier. They were holding their laptop screen over the copier. Yes, they were photocopying their screen to ‘print’ out the memo that was just emailed around so that they could file that printed copy of that memo in a file cabinet.

Really a moment to remember but that was not the worst of it. The person doing it was the team lead for the help desk for which I worked at the time.

Yeah…I feel a *** head desk *** coming on again just remembering it.
