Random Thought for Friday, December 4, 2015: Editing, Editing…Seppuku with a Spork?

JournalCupWelcome to Friday’s Random Thought.

Well, #NaNoWriMo2015 is over. Yup, I won! I did it! I broke the 50K barrier on November 27, 2015. It’s on to editing and I know that is a thing that many writers loathe a bit.

Editing is that process where you polish up that work of love you just spent days and night creating. That’s what we tell ourselves as it is also that time when you realize that the word star for example does not contain that many iterations of ‘z’ and ‘q’. You also learn that the really cool name you came up with for a character is not consistently spelled correctly across 140 some odd pages.

Editing is just part of the writing process and I will be busy working on the my next book, It Began Among the Stars. Release date? Well, got to edit it first.

If you want to keep up to date on my next book, tidbits or leave about giveaways first, sign up on my mailing list.

Speaking of giveaways, I’m giving away 3 copies of Fragmented in Kindle format in December. To enter the giveaway simply sign up for our mailing list. Winners will be picked at random on December 11th, 18th and on Christmas day!

And on a more somber note, please keep Cliff Calendar in your prayers.  He was a friend and coworker of mine and past away after a tough fight with cancer.  Cliff buddy, we will miss you!

Happy Friday Everyone!

Random Thought for Friday, July 17, 2015: Knowing You Have Made It

JournalCupWelcome to Friday’s Random Thought.

There is a question you hear at some point in an interview of some successful person.  “When did you know you had made it?”

What exactly does that mean, made it? Made it rich?  Made it to the point that you don’t worry about money?  Made it to the point that you are happy?  What is this thing?

Well, as of late, I’ve been wondering if I have made it as a writer.  I’ve worked hard this year and released two books, one being a fan fiction collection from a few years ago and the second an original work with a sequel in the works.

So, does publishing 2 book in 7 months mean I’ve made it?  Possibly.  Am I rolling in profits from the books?  No, not really.  Writing as a profession is feasible but not for someone who has only published two books.  I have a day job and I am thankful for that as the bills are getting paid.  It will take a lot more time and hard work to make a living as a writer.

So, when will I know that I’ve made it as a writer?  For some, it is when they are able to write and that is the only job they have.  Others it is when they are surrounded by fans, the mere mention of their name produces accolades for their work.

By those measurements, no, I’ve not made it as a writer but those were not my goals. I know I’ve made.  How you may ask?

So far, I’ve accomplished the goals I set out in January of this year.  I’ve released the two books I wanted to get released.  I’ve had positive sales and reviews on both those books from the people who are reading them.  I am working on another book and making the progress that I want to make on that book.

You have made it when you have accomplished the goals you set for yourself, goals that are realistic and attainable through hard work.

Of course I would love to be a full-time writer.  Of course I would love to have droves of fans beating down the doors to buy my books but I am relatively unknown to the reading masses.  To have the popularity of someone like James Patterson is not something that happens overnight.  That takes years of work and yes, I am willing to put into this that kind of time investment.  Will I ever get there?  I don’t know and I honestly don’t think that is a realistic goal but that will not deter me from trying and it I won’t implode if I never get there.

For now, I will set realistic goals and celebrate achieving them.  Many little goals and many little celebrations helps to keep a positive outlook.  It helps you to absorb those set backs and continue on rather than be decimated by them.

With Fragmented being available for almost 3 weeks now what told me today I have made it?  For what I set out to do, yes I have.  I am happy with the result and I am happy with the feedback I am getting about the book.  I have more goals and I will keep working on them.  So for today, I’ve made it.  Tomorrow, well, we shall find out.

Happy Friday Everyone and of course, shameless plug, go buy a copy of Fragmented today!
